The phenomenon called internet chatting
A couple of days back I started thinking about technology and its impact on life, and began to think of what was the invention which had been responsible for changing my life to a point of no return. I thought of the phone, the computer, the internet. Mobiles etc and finally decided on internet as the one.
Though I had created a yahoo account in my +2, my tryst with the internet didn’t begin at that point in time. Through out my first semester I used to go once a week to the computer information center ( CIC) to mail my mausi. Then by 2nd term, I got frust of the lack of scenery and village life , and being a teetotaler at that point in time, turned to internet chatting. There was some site which everyone seemed to be using, so I went there too. Someone explained the “fundaes “ of how to find out if so and so is a chick.. and then how to send a private message.. and some others gave fundae on which “type” of messages worked. Thus began my tryst with “public” chat rooms. Some of the interesting experiences that happened.
Profile – some teen female from phillipines ( that particular site had girls from phillipines, Australia, japan , Thailand etc.. if u saw an Indian ip u quickly learnt that that was the guy sitting opposite u starting a love story – ask psycho about Erica 15 f from Mumbai for details ) – now back..
I say hi!
She says hi! Asl?
Me : whats asl?
Me : after some 5 mins.. hello??
A friend.. sale tujhe asl nahi pata ( as if this is like PSPO) So it transpires asl means age sex and location. Here are some of the other things I learnt.. either the easy way or the hard way .. of course I also did the same yeh nahi jaanta stuff.. on occasion in public to some people..
ROFL – rolling on the floor laughing
ROFLMAO – rolling on the floor laughing my ass off
Brb – be right back
So on so forth..
Anyways, this as expected did not last long, after all how much can one talk to 15 and 13 year old Australians .. so next came rediffchat.. so on so forth.. till I got internet in my room.. at some point in 2nd year, when one was introduced to this animal called yahoo messenger which simply took up my time like crazy. For the whole of my 2nd year and lots of 3rd year I explored this option a lot.. this time consuming exercise ended with the beginnings of yet another tryst – this time with alcohol. I am not sure which of these will ultimately become the one with greater impact.. that’s only for time to tell.
Meanwhile, just as a tribute to this invention, and to show the variety of lukkha I ve done on this, is a cross section of people ive chatted with ( not necessarily for lengths of time)
Names not mentioned because of generic reasons
Phd student – daughter of a prof at iit b. did lot of lukkha in my 2nd year.
11 year old American girl – was hilarious, but had to give up after some time
14 year old Mumbai female – ( final year time) – she was a fan of harry potter at the time I was one.. but then.. I lost interest in harry potter
A chinki female – whose bf became jealous, still get a laugh from the email he sent me, and her email apologizing for him ( after she sent over her pics – apparently the guy was shorter than her.. she was 154 cm)
An Australian Indian law student – nice looking but not too interesting.
23 yr old Computer Instructor @ aptech jaipur or something – huge fan of phoebe and ursulla (
23 yr old (now) CompSci grad from cal – claimed to play quake, had chatted on a lot of things with her.
23 year old psychology student from LSR –now doing post grad – likely to end up as my bhabhi in some time.
17 year old psychology student, Riverside, CA – who likes jeff in coupling
29 year old Doctor from new delhi, she made me take a few “quizzes” which sort of upset her( she says my readings are way off – confirming my worst fears :D)
Sunshine – whose comments and blog have been referred
Emgi – HR management student. Blog on display
Ekta – female India blog referred as vampire girl
Sue – no comments :P
There are some others who find honourable mention, like a certain Persian female – ( too bad her English was std 3 level) , a couple of French ones( when I was learning French and enthu to practice it on skype) ,a female on social security in US, Another one working with a bank, a couple of guys in Mumbai who loved varsh and landed at chowpatty with a red rose wearing some clothes which they described..
Overall.. an interesting experience. Of course, finding newer people has more or less ended, now only a few interesting or fake orkut profiles get my attention, that too is generally referral.
But must say, has been an interesting kind of people ive met, shows that the world is indeed becoming small.
